Bullington Design Lab – Part 2
The vision is to create a classroom environment that will inspire 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. The Design Lab would include movable tables and chairs that could group four to ten students per collaborative group depending on the activity. Grouping in this manner, in combination with the technology that we already have, could provide multiple learning benefits:
• Creating a collaborative and problem solving environment in the classroom which is an essential 21st century skill.
• Increasing student engagement by involving students in discussion and interactivity.
• Increasing achievement levels by involving students in the learning process.
• Teachers are better able to spend more time guiding, facilitating, and challenging students to learn at a higher level of rigor and application.
Several years ago, the High School began the process of converting classrooms of interested teachers into Design Labs. The FHS teachers involved report increased student engagement, increased insight to students and their abilities, increased performance on initial exams, and increased collaboration among peers. They have also seen the levels of questions asked by the students themselves to be at a higher level of rigor. Our vision is to continue to increase the number of design labs to give students an environment conducive to learning in the 21st century.
